Cristina Scabbia

Cristina Scabbia (born June 6, 1972, in Milan, as Cristina Adriana Chiara Scabbia) is an Italian singer and has been the lead vocalist of Lacuna Coil since 1996.

In 1991, Scabbia began her professional career by performing as a singer in various bands. She is considered a Grande Dame of metal, as she has been a prominent presence on stages worldwide for over 25 years.

Many Names for One Band

In 1994, Scabbia met singer Andrea Ferro and bassist Marco Coti Zelati at the Mitternachtsclub in Milan, members of the band Sleep of Right. Cristina and Marco fell in love and were a couple for over ten years. After being initially hired only for some background vocals, the band quickly realized that Ferro's male vocals harmonized well with Scabbia's. She was asked to become a permanent member of the band, and she accepted. Before Cristina's confirmation to join the band, they changed their name to Ethereal. Later, with the lineup of Cristina Scabbia, Andrea Ferro, Marco Coti-Zelati, Claudio Leo, Raffaele Zagaria, and Leonardo Forti, the band adopted the name Lacuna Coil, aiming for a unique identity.

The breakup of Cristina and Marco in 2004 had no impact, and in the following years, Cristina, Andrea, and Marco remained the core members of Lacuna Coil. From 2004 to 2017, Scabbia was in a relationship with James Root, one of the guitarists of Slipknot.

Mistaken for a Groupie

Cristina Scabbia consistently advocates for feminist issues. She shares that multiple times in her career, she wasn't taken seriously and was sometimes even mistaken for a groupie, girlfriend, or a "pretty accessory" right before going on stage. Generally, she has a thick skin and is glad to be the only woman among her male bandmates. This has toughened her, she affirms.

As Cristina frequently toured with her band Lacuna Coil, she has traveled extensively. Always carrying her smartphone, she often goes on long walks. Her bandmates see her walking down the street, staring at her phone. "Some are probably annoyed by me, but I think the gaming community understands me," says Scabbia.

Cristina is known as an avid gamer and has made a name for herself in this community as an influencer and streamer.
