Charlotte Wessels
Johanna Charlotte Wessels (born May 13th 1987 in Zwolle, Niederlande) received training in both jazz and classical singing and was the frontwoman of the Symphonic Metal Band Delain from 2005 to 2021. Currently, she performs as a solo artist.
Charlotte played the clarinet in classical orchestras as a child before becoming interested in singing at the age of 13. At the age of 14, she took lessons in jazz and classical singing. Together with a friend, she composed songs and formed her first band with him. She later joined several local bands.
At the age of 17, she met Martijn Westerholt. Westerholt had already founded a musical project called Delain in 2002. Charlotte Wessels decided to join this project and started writing lyrics for the debut album Lucidity, which was released in 2006.
This was followed by three more albums as well as tours and appearances at festivals such as Wacken Open Air, Rockharz Open Air, Summer Breeze and the Metal Female Voices Fest.
Disputes lead to band departures
On February 15, 2021, it was announced that Delain would be dissolved in its previous line-up and continued as a musical project by Martijn Westerholt alone. Apparently, various internal differences within the band had caused disputes between the members, especially with founder Westerholt. In the meantime, the band is back on the world stage with a new line-up (including front woman Diana Leah).
Charlotte Wessels' first solo album entitled "Tales From Six Feet Under" was released on September 17, 2021. The follow-up, "Tales From Six Feet Under Vol2", followed just one year later. The new album "The Obsession" was released on September 20, 2024. In contrast to the two previous albums, Charlotte has returned to her metal roots musically - and has also brought former Delain colleagues on board.
