Anna Murphy
Anna Murphy is a Swiss musician and sound engineer, primarily known for her role as a hurdy-gurdy player and singer in the folk metal band Eluveitie. In 2016, she co-founded the folk metal band Cellar Darling with her former Eluveitie bandmates Merlin Sutter and Ivo Henzi.
Anna Murphy's full name is Anna Maria Murphy, and she was born on August 10, 1989 in Switzerland to her Irish father, Andrew Murphy, originally from Dublin, and the soprano singer Christiane Boesiger. Both her parents worked as professional opera singers in Switzerland, exposing Anna to music from an early age.
At the age of 16 in 2005 or 2006, Anna Murphy joined the Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie as a hurdy-gurdy player. The band was in search of a hurdy-gurdy player at that time, and Murphy, who was introduced to them by a friend, auditioned and was eventually accepted into the band. She had only started playing the instrument a few months prior, inspired by the music of the German band Faun. After a few lessons at a music academy, she taught herself to play the instrument primarily by studying Eluveitie's songs, using a borrowed hurdy-gurdy. In addition to the hurdy-gurdy, she occasionally plays the flute and sings in numerous songs.
In the spring of 2010, Anna Murphy, along with Meri Tadic (Eluveitie), founded the ambient project godnr.universe!. By the end of the year, Murphy had also joined the folk group Fräkmündt (named after the old name of Mount Pilatus), which competed in the Swiss national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011. However, their song "D'Draachejongfer" ultimately lost to Anna Rossinelli's "In Love for a While." Since the spring of 2011, Anna Murphy has worked as a sound engineer at the Obernauer Soundfarm Studios near Lucerne. In October of the same year, she also became a permanent member of the band Nucleus Torn.
In early May 2016, it was announced that due to internal disputes, including a conflict involving drummer Merlin Sutter, Anna Murphy left Eluveitie. In 2016, she co-founded the folk metal band Cellar Darling with her former Eluveitie bandmates Merlin Sutter and Ivo Henzi, and they released their debut album "This Is The Sound" in June 2017.
