Charlotte Wessels releases ‘Backup Plan’ with Asger Mygind from VOLA

Charlotte Wessels has given her fans a special gift: just in time for the first anniversary of her debut album The Obsession, the former Delain singer is releasing the new single "Backup Plan" in a special collaboration.

After Charlotte Wessels and her band accompanied Vola on their Friend of a Phantom Tour in 2024, it was a logical step to continue the collaboration. The single "Backup Plan (feat. Asger Mygind/Vola)" was originally an outtake from The Obsession sessions, but has only now been completed.

Charlotte Wessels explains that the song was persistent and wouldn't let her go: "Something about it never felt complete until we toured with Vola and the missing piece revealed itself." For her, Asger Mygind's voice brought the necessary contrast between beauty and darkness to the song. The idea behind the piece is a "conversation between life and the quiet pull of the unknown, a duet with death, which presents itself not as a villain, but as a kind of refuge." Charlotte is convinced: "This version finally sounds the way it always should have."

Asger Mygind from Vola also jumped at the chance when the request came. He describes Charlotte's music as "incredibly distinctive, adventurous and catchy."

"I didn't need any time to think when Charlotte asked me if I wanted to be a guest on “Backup Plan”," adds Mygind. He enjoyed immersing himself in Charlotte Wessels' musical universe. For him, it was "definitely a challenging song to sing," but at the same time "great fun to use my voice a little differently than I'm used to!"

Deluxe update and tour preview

The new single is part of The Obsession (Deluxe Edition), which will be released digitally via Napalm Records this Friday, 24 October 2025. In addition to "Backup Plan", the expanded version also includes three live recordings from Dynamo Metal Fest, an extended version of “Breathe” and a new interpretation of the single "Dopamine" featuring Simone Simons (Epica).

Charlotte Wessels looks back and ahead: "It's crazy that it's already been a year since The Obsession came out, and yet this record still has stories to tell. The digital deluxe edition is our way of breathing new life into those stories and expanding the world of the album."
